Sacred Arts
Thangka

Mystic Art Retreats leads thangka retreats into Dharamshala, Bhutan, and Nepal, where this sacred painting tradition is still part of everyday spiritual life. A thangka is a Tibetan Buddhist scroll painting on cotton or silk, depicting Buddhas, bodhisattvas, mandalas, and sacred stories, created according to precise proportions and colors so it can function as a "recorded message" and visual scripture for practice. On retreat, participants learn how these portable "temples" are used in Vajrayana Buddhism as meditation aids and teaching tools, and then work with local artists and practitioners to paint or color their own images—treating each brushstroke as part of a contemplative process rather than just an art class.
